HS 845710: machining centres and the importance of national subdivisions

Guide reviewed 2026-09-23. Source observations below retain their own dates.

A machinery tariff search often returns a broad product family before the more detailed statistical or national entry. For machining centres, the archived US schedule illustrates why a detailed line with no amount must be read together with its parent tariff line.

Use the technical specification

Provide the machine’s principal function, material worked, configuration, control system, condition and relevant dimensions. The archived family is for machining centres for working metal; the label “CNC machine” alone does not establish that the product fits this family.

A child line may rely on a parent tariff line

In the US source, 8457.10.00 is the parent line. The detailed example 8457.10.00.05 describes used or rebuilt equipment and has no duty amount printed on its own row. Its page therefore exposes the parent duties separately. Do not turn the blank child field into a zero rate or silently copy a parent value without showing its source.

Dimensions can distinguish source subdivisions

Other US child entries in the same family have dimension-based descriptions. Read their full hierarchy to identify what the dimension measures before choosing one. Preserve the manufacturer’s drawing or technical sheet so that the measurement and product configuration can be checked.

Check destination procedures as well as tariff columns

The Saudi example has a procedure identifier in the archived export. Consult the official portal for the procedure’s requirements instead of assuming that the duty column settles import permission. Used equipment, accessories, tooling and spare parts should be described explicitly in the request.

Before requesting a shipment check

  • What material and operations is the machine designed for?
  • Is it new, used or rebuilt?
  • What configuration and dimensions are documented?
  • Does the shipment include separately described tooling or parts?
